Four groups of 10 investigators visited the new building, which will open its doors next autumn. The works are almost finished and the visit gave a close idea of what will be like working in the CIBEK.

Mr. Josep Huguet, Counsellor for Innovation, Universities and Enterprise (DIUIE) of the Catalan Government, has formed part of the large official delegation that visited today the works of the Biomedical Research Center Esther Koplowitz (CIBEK). This new building, which will be functioning before the summer of 2010, is an opportunity raise research potential of Hospital Clínic - IDIBAPS of Barcelona. It is born with networking vocation and will be integrated in the structures that form the CERCA project led by the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), directed by Mr. Ramon Moreno, who also took part in the visit.

This award recognizes the task of patronage of the Foundation directed by Esther Koplowitz and her business success. The President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government), José Montilla, and the counselor of Culture, Joan Manuel Tresserras, assisted to the act thas been celebrated today in the Real Teatro of Madrid.

The works of the CIBEK advance as foreseen. Now that the demolition of the structures that occupied the site of the CIBEK is finished, the dimensions of the future building and the public park that will be constructed on the back can be perceived for the first time. Soon the tasks of excavation will start, and will be followed by the raising of the structures of the new research center.

Coinciding with the beginning of the works, the first scale model of the Centro de Investigación Biomédica Esther Koplowitz (CIBEK) will be exposed during the next months in the Hall of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona (Villarroel 170). The scale model shows the general look that will offer the new center from the street, and gives an approximate idea of how the spaces will be distributed.

The first study by a CIBEK Research group has recently been published. It is a prospective investigation assessing the adrenal function in patients with cirrhosis, sepsis and circulatory failure. The study demonstrates that adrenal dysfunction frequently occurs in patients with cirrhosis and severe infection. It also shows that treatment with hydrocortisone is associated to a rapid normalization of circulatory function with a significant decrease in hospital mortality.

The report defines the portfolios for Central Services that the CIBEK would offer to the Center’s researchers, identifies the research groups within the IDIBAPS that would join the Center and also their space needs according to their growth expectations, defines what features the research laboratories and their common infrastructures should have, analyzes the platforms that would support the research groups and their services portfolio, and, finally, proposes the structure and dimensions of the General Services Area.

An exchange of land between the Hospital Clínic and the Ajuntament de Barcelona will be the basis for a further expansion of the hospital, which will occupy most of the space of an adjacent fire station, whilst the city council will be able to place a series of new services on the new site in the heart of the Eixample. This agreement will also boost the construction of the future Centro de Investigación Biomédica Esther Koplowitz (CIBEK) within the IDIBAPS.

Joan Rodés, general director of the Hospital Clínic and the IDIBAPS, presented in December 2005 the construction project for a new building, the Centro de Investigación Biomédica Esther Koplowitz (CIBEK). The new premises will be devoted to experimental laboratories, platforms for research support, management offices and boardrooms, among others. Altogether, the building will occupy an area of 9.500 square meters and will accommodate more than 300 first-rate researchers.
